Being environmentally conscious is now a significant part of running a modern business.

Not just making for good practice, these policies are often cost as well as environment saving practices and are therefore make sound business sense.

Naturally as high consumers of paper and board we have a self regulated paper and cardboard recycling program.

Our only toxic waste is in the form of Laser toners and ink cartridges. We are part of a scheme that sees these products replenished before recycling.

Where possible we run a paper reduced office. Unfortunately paper free is virtually impossible but as new technologies and programs become available we are increasing able to reduce the amount we print or post. Around 80% of our project management and administration is done electronically through our internal network.

We run Apple Mac computers. Apple are one of the most responsible manufacturers of computers. As well as being great machines to work with we also love them for their green credentials. We do have a lonely PC for web and multimedia testing.

Visit www.apple.com/environment for more information.

We have a full power down policy over night. No machines, lights or appliances are left on that do not need to be.

We always recommend paper from sustainable sources such as managed forests. This is often better than using recycled paper which can have a high chemical content to help bind the damaged paper fibres.

Huge environmental consideration is also made in the construction, storage and disposing of exhibition stands. We and our suppliers are always fully compliant with all regulations.

This necessity, obviously, extends to all ‘green’ regulations with which we always comply fully and take steps to exceed the standard when possible.

Despite being based within an old watermill, and having a fully functioning mill stream alongside the building, we do not recover any of the natural power.

We do boil the kettle too much. This is actually one of our highest power consuming devices and we are currently looking into alternative devices such as the Tefal Quick Cup. < What is this? Click here to find out

Travel remains a challenge. Because of our location all out members of staff use the car to commute to work.

Many international projects see us travelling abroad. Transporting exhibitions generally involves road freight whilst meeting foreign clients or overseeing projects will often involve air travel. In every case the most cost efficient method is always taken. The vast majority of this cost is fuel influenced. Where we can keep these costs low we not only save money for our customers but also help reduce CO2 output and resource consumption.

After direct involvement with a South African project in 2001 (Thandi) we are very aware of the good that Fairtrade projects do for both the communities involved as well as the industries they operate in. Where possible we try to support Fairtrade projects. (We drink a lot of Fairtrade coffee.)

We are lucky. We live in the modern world with many privileges that others throughout the world do not have.

Each year we support a charity. Our selection is often emotive. This year we are supporting Sightsavers www.sightsavers.org. Obviously sight is so very important to us as designers and we hope that this way we are helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

In July of 2010 Hansell Design were a main sponsor of "The Semillons", A charity event for the wine industry to raise money for Everyman. Hugely popular, The Semillons event saw key male figures in the wine industry putting on a 'special show' for all the ladies of the trade. As well as the event identity and website, Hansell Design also supplied 4 "Butlers in the buff" to serve Champagne to the audience wearing little else than a bow tie and waiters apron. Visit www.semillons.co.uk for more information.

As part of the continuing drive to improve our services we have successfully completed the ISO-9001 accreditation process.
